How GPA is calculated

Each letter grade converts to a point value (an A is worth 4.0, a B is worth 3.0, and so on), and each course’s grade points are multiplied by its credit hours — a 4-credit class counts more toward your GPA than a 1-credit class. Add up all the grade-point totals, divide by total credit hours, and that’s your GPA.

How to calculate GPA in 3 steps

  • List each course’s letter grade — A, B+, C-, and so on.
  • Enter each course’s credit hours — a 4-credit class weighs more than a 1-credit class.
  • Add courses and click Calculate — the tool multiplies grade points by credits and divides by total credits.

Weighted vs. unweighted GPA

This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale used by most colleges and universities. High schools sometimes use a weighted scale that gives extra points for honors or AP courses (an A in an AP class might count as 5.0 instead of 4.0) — check your school’s specific policy if you need a weighted figure.

Worked example

Say you took three courses this term: an A in a 3-credit class, a B+ in another 3-credit class, and an A- in a 4-credit class. Grade points: A = 4.0 × 3 = 12.0; B+ = 3.3 × 3 = 9.9; A- = 3.7 × 4 = 14.8. Add those up for 36.7 total grade points, over 10 total credit hours: 36.7 ÷ 10 = 3.67 GPA.

Letter gradeGrade pointsTypical percentage
A / A+4.093–100%
A-3.790–92%
B+ / B / B-3.3 / 3.0 / 2.780–89%
C+ / C / C-2.3 / 2.0 / 1.770–79%
D+ / D1.3 / 1.060–69%
F0.0Below 60%

Percentage bands vary by institution — this table reflects the most common US convention; check your school’s syllabus if a course is graded on a different curve.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work for semester GPA or cumulative GPA?

Both — enter only this semester’s courses for a semester GPA, or every course you’ve taken for a cumulative GPA.

How do plus/minus grades affect GPA?

Most schools use the standard scale shown in this calculator (A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, etc.). A few schools don’t use plus/minus grading at all — check your institution’s grading policy if your result looks off.

How do I calculate my GPA by hand, without a tool?

Multiply each course’s grade point value by its credit hours, add those totals together, then divide by your total credit hours. This calculator does exactly that automatically — useful for checking your manual math or working with many courses at once.

Can I convert a percentage or numeric mark into a GPA instead of using letter grades?

Yes — convert your percentage to the nearest letter grade first (for example, 93% and above is usually an A, 90–92% an A-), then enter that letter grade here. Grading scales vary by school, so check your institution’s exact percentage-to-letter breakdown if you’re near a cutoff.

Can I calculate a GPA without knowing my credit hours?

If every course carries the same credit weight, you can enter an equal number (like 1) for each course and get a simple average of your grade points. For an accurate GPA that reflects real course weighting, use each course’s actual credit hours instead.
